Sclerotherapy

Some veins, typically found on the legs are close to the surface of the skin and can look like tree branches or spider webs, and sometimes a bruise. They are usually genetic, but can also develop from trauma. If you have been hesitant to wear shorts or skirts because you are embarrassed of spider and varicose veins on your legs, sclerotherapy may be a viable solution.

Sclerotherapy is a procedure in which a tiny needle is used to inject a sclerosing solution into the veins. The veins collapse and are reabsorbed and over 85% spider veins are generally no longer visible after 2 days to 6 weeks. The treatment is seen to be permanent for those particular veins. The treatment is usually performed in multiple sessions, spaced about 2 weeks apart, and is administered into quadrants, usually an entire leg or thigh. For three days following treatment, you will need to wear medical grade compression stockings, which helps to prevent pigmentation. For the few days after treatment, we encourage walking, but not weight lifting.

There are a couple different solutions that can be used for sclerotherapy. One is a hypertonic saline solution (salt water), which has been used for many years and is very effective, although it does sting. There are no allergies to saline solution. The other solution is, Aethoxysklerol® Sclerosing Agent, which contains polidocanol, a chemical with anesthetic properties and is
therefore almost painless. Bruising may occur after treatment and typically disappears within 1-2 weeks.

Some of the current laser treatments for spider vein treatment may be associated with significant discomfort and less effectiveness, which may discourage patients from seeking treatment. Sclerotherapy still remains the primary treatment for small-vessel varicose disease. Unsightly telangiectasias (spider veins) are present in many men and women of a large
age range. We offer a free consultation so we can discuss your specific expectations and confirm what would be the best option for you. Dr. Hamilton has been doing sclerotherapy for over 25 years and Shanah, his PA, for over 10 years.
